Beta is a new festival of art and technology critically engaging with the impact of emerging technologies on society. Taking Ireland’s role as a central node in today's wired world as a starting point, Beta will showcase and celebrate Ireland’s research and artistic communities through a combination of creativity, debate and experimentation. Beta allows members of the public to engage playfully and critically with new technologies essentially beta testing ethical issues facing society.

WHEN?

The festival runs 6th - 22nd November 2026. It always overlaps with Science Week and Irish Design Week.

WHERE?

The Digital Hub have made a five-year commitment to the festival (2023 - 2028) and in 2026 the festival will take place in The Digital Hub, Pallas Studios, Project Arts Centre, IMMA and Alliance Francais.

WHY BETA?
We came up with Beta as a title for the festival as it is immediately linked to technology, it is experimental in nature and it allows us the opportunity to beta test the ethical implications of these technologies on society with the general public.&#38;nbsp;
WHY NOW?
The festival is currently the only festival of its kind in Ireland for art and technology bringing together artists, researchers, and industry with a focus on ethics and public engagement. The recently published National Artificial Intelligence Strategy and National Digital Strategy highlight Ireland’s longstanding commitment to being a leader in innovation and research in digital technologies, platforms and infrastructures - a commitment that has seen so many international tech companies establish themselves within the country over the past two decades. With government plans to position Ireland as a leader in artificial intelligence and immersive technologies it has never been more important to engage the general public with the skills and literacy required to use new technologies, while critically situating them within wider societal contexts relevant to our contemporary networked world. The Arts Council plans to publish their Digital Art Policy this year and this has also highlighted the need for more opportunities for communities interested in art and technology to come together.
IDENTITY &#38;amp; DIGITAL COMMISSION
The artist Leon Butler was commissioned to imagine what the identity of a festival of art and technology could be and he created an artistic response utilising machine learning to generate a new font - he corrupted the data set with unusual fonts to lean into the more uncanny and imperfections of the type. The final logo almost looks hand drawn or screen printed with beautifully imperfect edges - this juxtaposition of cutting-edge technology and human creativity is exactly what we want to showcase and explore with the festival.

The homepage of the website features a new commission from the artist and designer Farouk Alao. He is a&#38;nbsp; artist specialising in 3D motion and web design, driven by the possibilities these mediums offer for immersive and interactive experiences. He drew inspiration from nature, his world, and human emotions, his vision explores the intersection of reality and imagination.

The artists core concept behind the site and motion piece is positioning Beta Festival which is represented by the Beta Cube as a centre point in which art, technology and creativity revolve. He developed the Beta Cube in response to Leon Butler's Beta logo design.

<description>News&#38;nbsp;Beta Festival Launches AI Art Assembly Report II
May 2026: Beta Festival has released the second edition of the AI Art Assembly Report, continuing an important conversation around the impact of artificial intelligence on artistic practice, cultural institutions, and creative labour in Ireland and beyond.

Developed through Beta Festival’s Assembly initiative, the report gathers perspectives from artists, researchers, educators, policymakers, and technologists working across the cultural sector. Building on the inaugural Assembly in 2024, last year’s discussions moved beyond identifying harms towards questions of organisation, responsibility, and collective action.

The report explores urgent issues including copyright and attribution, the environmental cost of AI systems, artistic precarity, transparency, consent, and the growing role of AI within cultural institutions. It also highlights opportunities for artists using AI critically, collaboratively, and experimentally — not simply as a tool of automation, but as a medium for questioning power, labour, and authorship.

Contributors to the Assembly included artists, academics, and researchers from organisations including ADAPT Research Centre, Goldsmiths, Trinity College Dublin, TU Dublin, University of Galway, and AIxDesign. The Assembly was facilitated through roundtable discussions designed to bring together expertise from across art, research, policy, and technology.

Importantly, the report positions artists and cultural workers as critical participants in shaping how AI develops within society. Its recommendations call for stronger support structures, dedicated arts representation in AI policy development, investment in AI literacy, and greater institutional responsibility around ethics, transparency, and artistic rights.

The AI Art Assembly format remains open source and continues to evolve through collaborations nationally and internationally.

Beta Festival 2025 Programme Announced

Nov 2025: Ireland’s festival of art and technology, Beta Festival, returns to Dublin this November with a bold new programme exploring themes of water, fluidity, artificial intelligence, ecology, and digital culture. Running across multiple venues from November 7–23, the 2025 edition brings together Irish and international artists, researchers, technologists, and audiences for exhibitions, performances, talks, workshops, and immersive experiences.

This year’s festival theme explores ideas of fluidity, systems in motion, from oceans and data streams to language, identity, and quantum states. Across the programme, artists examine how technology reshapes our relationship to the environment, memory, bodies, and each other.

A major highlight of the festival is Undercurrent: As Below, So Above at Dublin Port, bringing together new works by Kat Austen, Lauren Moffatt and Siobhán McDonald developed through our European S+T+ARTS4Water programme in collaboration with the Research Ireland ADAPT Centre. Through AI, immersive environments, sound, sculpture and virtual reality, the exhibition reimagines ports and oceans as spaces of ecological entanglement, memory, and repair.

Elsewhere in the programme, audiences can experience the Irish premiere of Foolish Flame by Peter Power and Leon Butler, an immersive installation merging dance, folklore, and machine learning; a landmark VR experience exploring Notre-Dame Cathedral; and a wide-ranging conference examining AI, digital ethics, creativity, and the politics of technological systems.

The festival also continues its commitment to supporting emerging and experimental Irish practice through the Local Artists Network, featuring new projects from artists including Aoife Dunne, Caroline Mac Cathmhaoil and István László. And for the first time we have a partnership with IMMA’s Living Canvas showing work from DISNOVATION.ORG and Liam Young.

Kat Austen’s New AI-Driven Artwork Tackles Microplastic Crisis at Galway International Arts Festival

July 2025:&#38;nbsp; Beta Festival and ADAPT Research Centre are thrilled that Kat Austen’s S+T+ARTS4WaterII project developed at Galway Port will premiere at the Galway International Arts Festival this July, addressing marine microplastic pollution and imagining regenerative futures with ethically trained AI.

Not Breaking. This Wave Drowns Hate, commissioned by Beta Festival and ADAPT Research Centre and produced by Culture Works uses sculptural ‘lighthouses’, an immersive soundscape, and an AI trained on data collected with Galway’s coastal communities to generate evolving visuals on sailcloth, envisioning a more balanced relationship between humans and the ocean.

As part of the project, Austen developed the Symbiophone, a prototype instrument that detects and creates sound from marine microplastics, with future plans to aid in their removal.

During her residency, Austen worked with local groups including the Galway Hooker Sailing Club, the Ukrainian community, and local schools, using their visions of sustainable coastal futures to train the AI at the heart of the artwork.

“Shared visions of a better future are crucial to building a sustainable world,” says Austen. “This work explores how we can work with AI to inspire the futures we want to see.”

The installation will run from 14–27 July 2025 at Bailey Allen Hall, University of Galway, as part of Galway International Arts Festival, with free admission.

Hung Lu Chan and Cezar Mocan will be collaborating with Irish partners as part of the Studiotopia project.

Hung Lu Chan (Michael) is a Taiwanese artist and social designer based in the Netherlands. He holds a master’s degree in Social Design from Design Academy Eindhoven and a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design from Taiwan. His creative practice lies at the intersection of interdisciplinary research, interactive installations, and participatory workshops. He is interested in exploring the diverse human imagination of the unknown, particularly looking into how humans imagine aliens throughout centuries from within. His multi-disciplinary work spans across art, neuroscience, spirituality, and AI neural networks. In his recent research project, he especially explores aliens as an internal phenomenon through a mix of guided meditation, multi-sensory neurofeedback, and embodiment. Aiming to foster more diverse and inclusive perceptions of the future, he positions his work as an imagination catalyst, re-exploring the unknown to challenge established norms and uncover humanity’s diverse imaginations. Ultimately, his work seeks to blur the borders between facts and fiction, science and fantasy, and others and selves.

Cezar Mocan is a Lisbon-based artist and computer programmer interested in the interplay between technology and the natural landscape. Using narrative generative systems—animated videos of infinite duration, real-time simulations built in game engines or other software—he creates worlds that recontextualize aspects of digital culture we take for granted, often in absurd ways, while investigating the power structures which mediate our relationship with technology. Beta Festival 2024 announcement.
Tuesday, 6 August 2024: Beta, Ireland’s art and technology festival, will return for its second year in the first two weeks of November. Co-founded and supported by The Digital Hub, Beta will host a series of events including exhibitions, keynote speakers, interactive workshops and an assembly centred on artificial intelligence in Dublin 8 and beyond.

The 2024 edition of Beta will explore critical themes around the relationship between technology and power including facial recognition technologies, the impact of AI on artists, untold histories &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;and elevating empathy through creative technologies.

The festival’s thematic exhibition, curated by Beta co-founder and director Aisling Murray and curator and researcher Nóra O’Murchú, features international and Irish artists, whose work will explore how technology can become a tool to resist hegemonic political orders and open new avenues for resistance.

In addition to the thematic exhibition, a second exhibition – Local Artists Network - will spotlight newly commissioned work by Irish artists including Aisling Phelan and Cailean Finn, among others.&#38;nbsp;

Beta will aim to evoke important discussions on topical areas at the intersection of art and technology, with Kay Watson, Head of Arts Technologies at the Serpentine Gallery in London scheduled to deliver a thought-provoking keynote speech at this year’s festival.

RESIDENCY
Beta festival is thrilled to have been funded by The Arts Council to facilitate a residency exchange with transmediale in Berlin.

Beta x transmediale&#38;nbsp;
Announcing Selected Projects for Beta x transmediale Residency

We are pleased to announce Bassam Issa Al-Sabah, bela and Kloxii, Mac Andre Arboleda, and Nadia J. Armstrong as artists-in-residence for the Beta x transmediale Residency this fall. The residency takes place in Dublin, Berlin, and remotely during October and November 2023.

During their residency, Bassam Issa Al-Sabah&#38;nbsp; will develop Uncensored Lilac – a new AI animated film. A story about revenge and desire, Uncensored Lilac questions the ways in which climate change affects and alters social and environmental relations. The film follows a group of goddesses, who may or may not be aliens, and their assembly of familiars, pets, servants, and technologies. Set in a dreamlike hallucinatory landscape that mutates between ornate embellishments and its original form, the landscape and the assembly have been invaded and altered by a toxic species, making them nurturing but venomous. Bassam Issa Al-Sabah is an interdisciplinary artist working with film, video, sculpture, and paintings, based in Belfast.

暴洪野火机构 – a fictional agency established by bela and Kloxii&#38;nbsp; – creates the context for their collaborative performance. Focusing on the production and dissemination of musical scores that respond to the anxieties of climate collapse and mass disintegration, the duo explores how the news and social media cycles of crises affect our emotional and psychological responses to them. Drawing inspiration from East Asian rain rituals and the duo’s witnessing of flash floods and wildfires in their homelands of South Korea and California, they question the atmosphere of never-ending doom, deconstructing and reorganising its patterns and rhythms. bela is a musician and a performance artist based in Berlin known for electronic music performance merging pungmul – a Korean folk act rooted in agricultural traditions and linked to past social movements - and vocals inspired by extreme metal. Kloxii is a Berlin-based artist and music producer of experimental pop inspired by trip-hop and industrial beats.

ABOLISH THE SCREEN! is an artistic research project and manifesto that investigates the implications and politics surrounding the screen as a central medium for societal functions. Through a series of workshops, dialogues, and presentations, the project questions what the abolition of the screen might mean, and speculates on the new dependencies that could arise from its disappearance. Mac Andre Arboleda&#38;nbsp; is an artist exploring the sickness of the internet, currently based in Berlin.

RENDER ME TENDER is an audiovisual experience that invites the public to consider the neo-primacy of the chat forum in our present understanding of communication. Rooted in cyborg feminist practices and eco-social concerns the project attempts to unbury the liveness and physical immediacy of the socio-political, and the oratory origins of the word “forum.” Through aesthetic signifiers, scripted conversations, and public interaction, automated AI characters will emerge on screens to engage spectators in rhetoric around the mutations of social interaction that the socio-technical history of the forum presents to us. Nadia J. Armstrong&#38;nbsp; is a Dublin-based visual artist working with performance, 3D composition, AI, and expanded video based in Dublin.

The residents were selected by Aisling Murray, Sheena Barrett, Tomke Braun, and Nóra Ó Murchú.&#38;nbsp;
The Beta x transmediale residency is a cooperation between transmediale, Berlin, and Beta festival, Dublin, and is funded by the Arts Council of Ireland International Residency Initiatives Scheme.

Gash Collective x BetaRising Damp, Doubt, ANIMWAL ft. aux pheonix, polyp

Gash Collective are proud to present a night of Irish experimental dance music supported by Roe &#38;amp; Co.Gash x Beta Festival is set to showcase Ireland's most innovative artists featuring an immersive ambient DJ set from polyp, two debut live sets from ANIMWAL and Doubt, and a headline solo performance from Rising Damp.

polyp (they/them) is a clump of cells grown in Dublin and made in Vietnam. Their taste varies between ambient and noisy, silly and sincere. They are vice chairperson of BPM energy, a brand new FLINTA-centered club night manufacturing countercultural cultural production.

ANIMWAL is a Polish music producer and DJ based in Cork. ANIMWAL reimagines her productions in an Ableton driven live performance with live vocals, midi controllers and synthesisers. She explores a broad range of musical genres from slow atmospheric beats with field recorded samples to up-tempo electronic dance music and everything in between.
Normally seen fuelling dance floor euphoria behind the decks, Doubt will be showcasing his own productions live for the first time at Betafest. Drawing on his past work as well as new material the performance will be a sonic expression of subjective dilemmas, feelings and frustrations he holds towards Ireland - channeling experience through immersive sound design, sampling and his staple percussion focused style of club music
Rising Damp (solo set) is an experimental artist whose music fuses the energy of EBM and punk. Known for her unconventional performances, she's no stranger to underground shows in tunnels, underpasses, and social centres. Her songwriting delves into subjects as diverse as brutalist architecture, cannibalism, intimate encounters with a motorbike, and thought-provoking themes of corporate metaphor and innovation.

Beta Fest x Concept NULL - Meet Up_02: Untitled_UnfinishedConcept NULL

Concept Null’s second new media art meet up will take place as part of this year's Beta Festival.

Untitled_Unfinished will provide a space for artists to showcase moments from their past projects where they have encountered setbacks or have fallen into stagnation, giving these abandoned projects a platform to be revisited and revalued.

At this event, speakers will take the stage to introduce and present their unfinished or untitled projects. They will delve into the core concepts and technologies employed, share the challenges they’ve confronted during development, and illuminate the unique aspects that continue to resonate with them. The project can be at any stage - whether it’s some buggy piece of code, a chaotic mood board, or a fully developed project which encountered unforeseen problems.
Concept Null is a collective of new-media artists dedicated to fostering connections among individuals with an interest in the intersection of art and technology in Ireland. They currently run the new media art newsletter and organise meetups where artists and makers can talk about their practice and work with others in the community.

Do you create art work exploring aspects of digital culture or technology? Do you have a project which is complete (or nearing completion) for which you would like feedback? Would you like to share your views of current work by other artists in a 'crit'?

Artist John Gerrard will lead a closed crit for 5-6 emerging artists as part of the 2023 BETA Festival Dublin in partnership with the Creative Futures Academy / NCAD.

The event is open to emerging artists exploring any aspect of digital culture and/or technology including algorithmic art, facial recognition technologies, deep learning and generative AI, video games, social media, screen culture, VR, 'deep fakes',&#38;nbsp; online social lives and relationships, etc. Projects which address the values of BETA Festival Dublin (see here) are strongly encouraged.

Participants in the crit will make short presentations about a current or recent project, and engage in a discussion with the other participants led by John Gerrard.&#38;nbsp;

The crit will take place in the Digital Hub, Dublin 8 from 2-5pm on Friday 3rd November. This opportunity is open to emergent artists (final year BA students, postgraduate students and new practitioners within 5 years of finishing study).

The new production sites of our accelerated contemporary world, the "dark factories" (or "lights-out factories") are fully automated factories that operate without human intervention. Without even having to light the space, machines can now "work" day and night, without breaks, without compromising the quality of their production. These places with a basic architecture take the form of large, modular, repetitive warehouses where everything is designed to facilitate the movement of robots.&#38;nbsp;Thomas Garnier proposes with Taotie an immersive installation which aims at questioning these new time-spaces of work and production. Can machines live without us in the dark?

Celtic Tigers, Bored Apes and other tales from the Miseryverse (Keynote)

12pm

Rachel O’Dwyer

Of his abiding mission to colonise Mars, Elon Musk has the following to say: “it’s about believing in the future and thinking that the future will be better than the past. I can't think of anything more exciting.”

Few of us believe that the future will be a nice place when we eventually get there. Instead, so much of our technical enchantments, whether it’s desperate bets on crypto, AI, bored apes, or a new life in the metaverse, seem to respond to this disillusionment, to the sense that the future is, well, a bit of a shithole. All previous pathways to what we might have once called ‘the good life’ aka, the stories we tell about how we and the world should ‘add up to something’ – tales of hard work rewarded, Celtic tigers, or ‘winning the system’ through perseverance, no longer ring true.&#38;nbsp; So what happens, as in the financial crash and the pandemic, when those fantasies begin to fray?

De/central: Who Owns the Web?

2pm

Rachel O’Dwyer, Linda Shelvin, Harun Šiljak, Aileen Carville

Decentralisation, blockchain technologies, and token-based economies are some of the key concepts and technologies associated with the evolution of the World Wide Web. Built upon transparency, Web 3.0 promises to empower users while making the Internet more democratic and equitable. However, as with all technological innovations, there is also much hype - this discussion focuses on the impact of Web 3.0 on privacy, security, and data sovereignty, asking if these new digital innovations are hindering or helping our hyperconnected world.

Navigating AI: National Perspectives on Policy and Regulation

3pm
Aphra Kerr, Elaine Burke
 Marguerite Barry,

In 2021, the National AI Strategy was published with the goal of setting out how Ireland can be an international leader using Artificial Intelligence to benefit the economy and wider society. This panel considers the strategy within international concerns and debates surrounding policy, regulation, and transparency including the upcoming EU AI act and the impact on creativity, particularly around Intellectual property and copyright.

From Local to Global: Ireland as an Infrastructural Node

4pm

Linda Doyle, Fiach Mac Conghail, Fiona McDermott

Since the first transatlantic cable connected Valentia Island to Newfoundland in the 1860s’, Ireland has long been a significant node in global networked communications, hosting not only the corporate headquarters of the most dominant companies of the networked era but also the physical infrastructure that supports them. Featuring contributions from industry, academia, and policy, this panel will consider the responsibilities, challenges, and opportunities facing Ireland in its role as a core infrastructural hub of the Internet.

Our Data, Our Environment: Extractivism and its impact

5pm

Patrick Brodie, Trish Morgan, Katie Nolan, Donal Lally

The current climate crisis sees the world faced with unprecedented global challenges. In thinking globally but acting locally we try to counterbalance environmental concerns. However, our interactions with networked technologies are another form of extraction - our data consumption contributes to further environmental instability. This is particularly evident in Ireland where the energy needs of the data centre industry result in massive demands on the national grid. This panel focuses on the extractive nature of data, asking what we can do to offset the environmental impacts of our networked interactions and how we can move towards a more sustainable future.

Creativity &#38;amp; the Technical Tendency

10am

Thomas Garnier, Cliona Harmey, Bassam Issa Al Sabbah, Sinead McDonald

Artists have always been innovators when it comes to using new technologies - from photography to hacking gameboys - they reimagine creative uses of new tools. This session focuses on the ways in which artists embrace and utilise digital technologies in their work while providing insight into the influence of technology on creative practice and the impact of creative practice on technology.

Unplugged Perspectives on the Digital Divide

11am

Kylie Jarrett, Shamim Malekmian, Paul O’ Neill, Harikrishnan Sasikumar

From exploitative labour practices associated with delivery workers and content moderators to issues surrounding exclusion based on age, gender, ethnicity, and location, the emancipatory promises associated with digital technologies and platforms often exacerbate and reinforce pre-existing divisions. This discussion engages with these divisions, asking how they can be challenged and changed while looking to identify ways in which we can use digital tech in a more ethical and sustainable manner.

The Bodily Experience in Hyperconnected Realities: Art and Technology

12pmDr Angela Butler, Aoibheann Greenan Joanna Walsh

This conversation will address art’s role in the digital age and its influence on the human-AI relationship, focusing on how technology impacts our embodied experiences and how it may shape our future connections.By delving into the implications of our burgeoning digital connections on our tangible and emotional experiences, the panellists will explore the emerging social dynamics, identities, and innovative thought patterns arising from interconnected realities.

Extending Reality: The Future of Storytelling?

2pmBronagh Gallagher (ScreenService), Elaine Hoey, Jo Mangan, Gareth Young

From Jaron Lanier’s Virtual Reality to the rise (and fall?) of the metaverse, we are always seeking out simulated networked environments with which to create and connect. This session features contributions from Irish-based creatives who use immersive technologies to build alternative worlds beyond our own and discusses the future potential of extended reality. In doing so, we ask how can we move beyond the spectacle of the technology itself to ‘real’ immersive experiences.

Material Matters: Artistic interventions in the network

3pm
John Conway, Kerry Guinan, Adam Stoneman

The history of AI is interwoven with that of textiles—the invention of the Jacquard Loom in 1804, which encoded pictures and patterns on ‘punch cards’ that could be read by machines, inspired Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine, considered the first computer. Mathematician George Boole, son of a shoemaker, invented Boolean logic, the system of noughts and ones that underpins digital age, and which echoes the binary process of weaving. Following this thread takes us to the neural net that powers AI image generation, formed of millions of artificial neurons—a multitude of interconnected and layered nodes light up with electronic signals until they give birth to a ready-made cultural product.

This session connects our hyper-networked era to the physical world through artistic interventions focusing on labour and mechanical processes and their histories.

Art as Critical Compass through Quantum Technologies

4pm

(FREE EVENT - No registration required)Studio Quantum Artists-In-ResidenceArtists often create work that signals the canary in the coal mine - early warning signs of the potential impacts of new technologies on society. For years, artists around the world have presented work in this sphere in relation to artificial intelligence. But what about quantum technologies? Can we have conversations about quantum now, that enable us to navigate future scenarios? What role can artists and the arts play in deepening our understanding and exploring potential issues?Studio Quantum led by Goethe-Institut Irland is a new artist residency programme and accompanying event series that connects artists and audiences with partners in technology, culture, science and education to foster an open dialogue on the topic of quantum technologies and the arts. Here, Studio Quantum artists-in-residence kennedy+swan discuss their projects and the importance of such art and technology residencies in conversation with Dr Deirdre Kilbane, Project Lead Ireland Quantum Communications Infrastructure, CONNECT Principal Investigator and Director of Research at Walton Institute. “Authentic” Creativity and Artificial “Intelligence”: The Generative Generation

12pm, FREE (Walk-in)

Moderator: Luke Clancy (Culture File)
Themes: AI, authenticity, art, creative process, automation, originality

Over the past number of years, the emergence of deep learning AI models has given rise to a wave of algorithmic platforms that create new worlds of expression and creativity with little more than prompts. From chatgpt to Dall-E , these algorithmic platforms are increasingly dominating our digital vocabulary, however with this new form of expression tensions are arising - hoax articles in national papers to fears over the Artificial intelligence being used to generate films scripts or negate the role of actors, these platforms are as problematic as they are creative. This panel will focus on the implications of Artificial Intelligence in the Creative Industries

Potato Internet by Caroline Sinders

The Potato Internet is an experimental small-scale social network, created by Caroline Sinders and Trammell Hudson to envision the internet in times of climate emergency and the global energy crisis. When imagining alternatives for today’s toxic and extractivist online world, the common criticism often comes down to: "but they don’t scale up". But what if the future of the internet is all about scaling down? In Potato Internet, the small scale allows the artists to build a functioning social network from scratch, rethinking all layers of the system, from hardware to protocols and governance. An 'anti-scale' network can be framed in a local context and endorse slow communication. For the physical framework, the artists experiment with potatoes as a source of energy, and with e-waste and other recycled materials for the interface. The governance of the network, its safety, equity and codes of conduct draw on Sinders' work on the Feminist Data Set.
